It’s finally time. Probably my most anticipated show for this year despite reading the manga and already knowing what goes down.
So, this show has had a rollercoaster of a production over the last few years, right? I’m sure by now everyone and their brother is aware that madhouse passed on season 2 of this show and JC Staff picked it up. I have a couple of things to say, mostly about how dumb everyone is:
- Madhouse almost never does season 2s. It’s so infamous there is a term called “the madhouse curse”. Back in 2015 I had no allusions madhouse would ever be handling season 2.
- Madhouse is not the animation juggernaut everyone thinks they are. This isn’t 2006 – Madhouse has made a lot of shows that look like complete shit. One punch man looked as good as it did because of the production – the staff, the animation directors, not at all because of Madhouse. Anyone remember magical warfare? Hell, madhouse is making a show this season that looks like absolute garbage.
So, with that out of the way, how does this season look? Needless to say, it doesn’t look quite as good as the previous season did – that would be basically impossible with the current staff and I’m sure everyone has already tempered their expectations. Now, that is not to say the show looks bad, because it doesn’t – it’s actually fine. The animation is solid, the art style isn’t janky and doesn’t clash with madhouse’s work, and everything appears to be sufficient. The only thing I strongly hate is that damn crossfade effect JC staff loves doing with electric attacks in their show. Genos jumps, attacks, and does a whole lot of stuff against the organization’s G4 – and it looks good.
Granted that I know everything that happens in this story, I won’t go about being surprised by any twists and turns the show throws at me, but I am looking to see some of my favorite scenes animated. It could be said I am biased – I’m a big fan of this series. I may be able to excuse things you might not be able to excuse.
I thought it was interesting that they switched the King arc with Garou’s reveal, but given that they wanted the episode to end with Garou’s face getting revealed, it actually made total sense. I quite like the voice they picked for him, but man, I can never get used to seeing him with silver hair. When he was first introduced in the manga, I was certain his hair was supposed to be yellow for some reason, haha. Ah well. As a fan so far, I’m looking forward to what JC Staff has to offer.
