While I never finished blogging about the original show a few years ago because I went into an unexpected hiatus, I promise you I kept up with the show and watched it religiously. I quite enjoyed it, especially the more focused second season and it’s solid, frantic storyline of frenetic alliances and tense situations. After handling the guild in proper fashion, how can the armed detective agency continue its story? If you watched to the very end, you may remember a villain who was introduced in a very sinister fashion – Fyodor. If you also watched the movie Dead Apple you will remember that Fyodor played a part there as well.
This time, rather than seeing the manner in which Dazai left the port mafia, we see the manner in which he entered. After bearing witness to Mori’s assassination of the previous port mafia head, for better or for worse he is an executive for the long haul. Considering the manic state the previous head was under, I would argue that Mori’s killing was an act of mercy, considering those who would have been slaughtered had his original orders been carried out.
As it would turn out, the boss is not quite dead, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It would appear his spirit has been seen a few times. Chuuya (who takes care of a city born out of an explosion crater) is forcibly recruited into the port mafia to help Mori and Dazai handle the unknown circumstances behind the mysterious return of the boss. No small feat of course, which is why Mori teamed him up with Dazai – something we know that became the normal way of doing things for the two of them up until Dazai’s last days in the port mafia.
Mori also points out something that may be fairly obvious to most, but about a third of the port mafia could be considered a loyalist to the old boss, so news of his assassination would not be handled well and would essentially spell the end to the port mafia.
I have to admit, when I first saw Dazai get hit by dark energy from behind, I suspected it could have been rashimon and it’s rambunctious holder – but I think considering the timeline this is before Akutugawa has signed onto the port mafia. Furthermore, I highly doubt he would attack the superior who’s respect he so coveted.
My guess is that the old boss was gifted in a way that either allowed his spirit to linger or permitted his power to activate after his passing. If it’s not that, I wouldn’t say it’s impossible that Fyodor is involved somehow. After all, that would be a nice way to tie him into the backstory of a few characters and set a little bit of foreshadowing for his motives.
